From my friends at Road America -the CHEVROLET fun never ends….
From my friends at Road America -the CHEVROLET fun never ends….
How about this…..
Just after the ZL1 launch , we had constraints on the hood insert. A few short weeks ago, the ZL1 Camaro went on a QA hold, and AGAIN the hood insert also went on constraint at the exact same time.
To the trained dealership eye – it would appear there is either a suppier availability issue, OR a quality issue with this part. This is my story and I’m sticking with it.
I am going to call bull on the “rear end” and “software” rumors….. The constraint posted is a SHORT one….and we have GM saying on record it will be a short delay. Seems like easy math to me…….and no, I don’t think the engines have been re-tuned with more Mustang killing power…
Something happens, and because of the drama of the forums and a few people on them, the worst always is expected and almost always isnt the case.
The Corvette 427 Convertible blends elements of the Z06 and ZR1 models to create the fastest and most-capable convertible in Corvette’s history.
Its heart is the 427-cubic-inch (7.0L) LS7 engine from the Corvette Z06. Rated at 505 horsepower (377 kW) and 470 lb.-ft. of torque (637 Nm), it is the most powerful engine ever installed in a production Corvette convertible – and, like the Z06, the 427 Convertible is only available with a six-speed manual transmission.
Supporting performance elements in the Corvette 427 Convertible include the driveline and rear axle system from the Corvette Z06, a rear-mounted battery and standard Magnetic Selective Ride Control. The standard 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels are wrapped in ZR1-style Michelin PS2 tires. Lightweight machine-face Cup wheels – introduced on the 2012 Corvette Z06 with Z07 and Corvette ZR1 with PDE performance packages – come standard and include unique gray-painted pockets. Black Cup wheels or chrome ZR1-style wheels are also available.
The combination of low mass and high output will make the 427 Convertible one of the fastest convertibles in the world, delivering estimated 0-60 performance of 3.8 seconds, quarter-mile performance of 11.8 seconds, lateral acceleration of 1.04 g and a top speed of more than 190 mph.

Based on the constraint list update (3/8/12) for the Camaro ZL1, it looks like the hood insert (which had a previous constraint) is AGAIN the reason for a ZL1 production hold up.
Constraints are listed as follows:
| 2012 Camaro | 1590 | &ZL1-B92 | ZL1 without B92 Hood Insert | Supplier Restriction |
| 2012 Camaro | 1591 | &ZL1-B92 | Base Black Painted ZL1 Hood Insert | Marketing Restriction |
I picked up the new Weapon-R Cold Air Intake for the Camaro (V6 in my case….) I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it actually worked out well, and proudly, I installed this one myself! I have a little adjustment to do (it was COLD the night I installed it)……
Price compared to others is VERY competitive, and the thing I like is the tube you can aim down to the airflow near the front of the car.
It may not have a fancy “box”, but for the price, it is effective and a good cost effective choice for a Camaro cold air intake. The “butt dyno” likes the improvement, and the “tone” that comes off the car now. THUMBSUP!

Wow, all the websites are buzzing with “a letter to dealers” about the Camaro ZL1 QA Hold..
Rumors are already buzzing from engine issues to a “quick HP” update to make it more competitive.
As I sit here, I am reminded of all the doom and gloom posted the last few years on the coupe, and then convertible.
Now the latest posts are this “letter” to dealers, which came to our dealership a day later than a camaro team email I posted on March 2nd…with similar content. Both the email and letter did not specify any major issue. But the haters and s-stir’ers are on a rampage.
The issue is a minor one – and is in front of everyone’s noses… And it isn’t anything new.
Ease up ZL1 haters – when the issue is revealed to you, you’ll more than likely be disappointed you won’t have much to discuss afterwards.
Do you have a ZL1 on order? Take my word for it – it is MINOR. Don’t drink the other websites kook-aid, and don’t listen to the senseless ramblinga of the end of the world – because besides the Silverado, camaro’s and their owners also survived, according to the commercial.
I’d say more but I fear the GM microchip implanted up my nose.
Got the throttle body installed, with a cold air intake.
The VMax gives my cold air intake a little more SNAP to make the butt dyno happy! Get a few more HP out of your V6 by letting it BREATH!

The all new 2013 Chevy Malibu impressed me with a COLOR Driver Information Center (DIC), which was so much easier to see, and added “class” to an already classy car.
It would be pretty cool for us Camaro Fans if the 2013 Camaro would include the same DIC! And who will be the first to try adding this into a pre-2013 Camaro?
STAY TUNED!
I was assiting with the Milwaukee Auto Show ZL1 reveal, so I was not invited to VIR (Chevy, Road America is right up the road….don’t be afraid to send one up to the track we sponsor, and I can make sure it is Mustang hungry…..). I’d love to ride shotgun with Rolex driver Jordan Taylor again – and provide video footage of the event. (I have the time).

This morning a note was sent to all Chevrolet dealers to advise General Motors continues to hold the shipments of the new 2012 Camaro ZL1. We are holding shipments as part of out quality assessment process. This is done to ensure we deliver the highest quality product to our customers.
Because of limited production of the 2012 ZL1, this action required us to also postpone this week’s order submission cycle for dealers to avoid having a back log of orders in system.
We understand there is great desire for ZL1 deliveries to begin and we can’t wait to get customers behind the wheel. We appreciate your patience and will continue to keep you posted on any developments regarding production and vehicle shipments.

When the new 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 arrives this spring, performance car enthusiasts will experience the hands-on driving satisfaction of a “stick” with the ease of an automatic transmission due to General Motors’ newly improved TapShift technology.
Since its introduction several years ago, TapShift has allowed drivers to control up- and down-shifts with paddle shifters. For 2012, GM powertrain engineers implemented a patent-pending software algorithm that improves tap response time by up to 60 percent compared to the previous system. No hardware changes were required for the upgrade.
“The faster you can get to the next gear, the better, and from the sound of it, the ZL1 automatic’s performance is going to make paddle shifting more exhilarating and satisfying for drivers of all skill sets,” said Eric Fedewa , director of Global Powertrain Forecasting at IHS Automotive. “We’re seeing a trend toward more manual-mode-capable, fun-to-drive automatic transmissions across all vehicle segments, and GM’s technology is leading the pack.”
The 2012 ZL1’s six-speed automatic transmission delivers a 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds – a tenth of a second faster than the manual transmission time.
By staging hydraulic pressure in the clutch for the next gear, the new control module algorithm reduces tap delay for the 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, and 4-5 up-shifts by 200-300 milliseconds. The system anticipates shift requests based on current gear, throttle, torque and speed. By pre-filling the clutch for the next gear, the tap up-shift response is near instantaneous.
“As great as the previous system’s performance was, we were driven to achieve even better results,” said Gabe Gibson, GM performance car calibration engineer. “Not only did we make the upgrade to Camaro, we implemented it on the 2012 Corvette as well, and will use it on all vehicles with TapShift control going forward.”
Staged up-shifts will help drivers of the 2012 ZL1 – the most powerful production Camaro ever – get the most out of its supercharged 6.2L engine that is SAE-rated at 580 horsepower (432 kW) and 556 lb.-ft. of torque (754 Nm).
ZL1 customers’ choice of an automatic 6L90 transmission with TapShift manual mode or a six-speed manual transmission is unmatched in its class. With 0 to 60 taking 3.9 seconds, and a top speed of 184 mph, the power and acceleration of the ZL1 automatic rivals many supercars.
“We think Camaro drivers will really appreciate the performance improvement offered by staged up-shifts, whether they’re merging onto the freeway or putting their ZL1 through its paces at the track,” Gibson said.
The Camaro ZL1 Coupe will go on sale this spring as a 2012 model. The Camaro ZL1 Convertible will go on sale this summer as a 2013 model. Chevrolet expects the automatic transmission to command up to 50 percent of ZL1 sales.
Just top follow up - I do not have any 2012 ZL1 allocation left. There is LESS ZL1 allocation available than the number of Chevy dealers in the USA in 2012.
The demand for the ZL1 FAR outweighs the supply (can you say MARK UP?) which means the dealer who haven’t sold their allocation, more than likely will be selling a car OVER MSRP on their lot soon.
If you want a ZL1, chances are you will be getting a 2013. If you want to place a deposit to get on the list for ordering a 2013, by all means, contact me. If you can be PATIENT, everyone wanting a ZL1 SHOULD BE able to GET ONE as a 2013 model - this means more cars at or less than sticker. Those who want 2012′s, it’s going to sting…. and what about potential changes / improvements to the 2013? It can only get better
As much as I like the Camaro, and the Camaro ZL1, you just can’t beat a nice custom car, made by a company with a little Chevy History…. A car that is SERIOUS eye candy for me is SLP’s ZL610 Corvette.
ZL1 Camaro or ZR1 Corvette lovers have to give this think a look -
I’d be more than happy to save you money on this car – we are VERY PRICE FLEXIBLE on the Corvette, and help keep the cost down on getting one, especially equipped with an SLP Upgrade. Just contact me at (262) 573-1702 today!
Check out the .pdf from SLP, that has engine, interior, and other exterior shots. Download it by clicking here ZL610 Dealer Brochure

Are you expecting your ZL1 soon? You may want to carefully check your paperwork for the correct delivery date.
If your dealer didn’t work out a “final” delivery date in advance with your knowledge or peremission, ALWAYS be sure to look at the paperwork. Because the date on the paperwork (if earlier than your actual pick up date) will be the start date of you warranty.
You could always have someone run your VIN in GM VIS to verify the warranty start date, just to be sure -
There may be goods reason to do this, but you shoiuld be aware of them as well as agree to them in advance.
Dealers who have cars built in the initial order submission should expect “a longer than usual shipping process”. This means dealers should not expect the cars until early to mid-March. This is so they go through a thorough QA process.
The GOOD news is, the carbon fiber weave is now OFF constraint for future orders -
Stay tuned…….
AND, see the ZL1 Camaro!

and other dealers are drooling, knowing they will be marking them up $10,000, $15,000 or more depending on their location.
I know even though we’re getting a small number to start, our customers are glad to know their ZL1 will not have any added mark up.
I actually have no one on my ZL1 convertible list, and there will be room for 2013 models.
Here’s Rick Hendrick driving his off the line:
You invite some “we drive all brand” car bloggers to drive the ZL1 at the track…
A better invitation would have been to invite Jeff Bucknum (www.jeffbucknum.com) and myself for a days worth of fun with the car….capturing footage along the way for my 1200+ Facebook friends and countless Jeff Bucknum Racing fans. The look of fear on my face riding shotgun at high speeds would have been priceless!
And MAYBE we could have found an unwanted Mustang along the way that we could have seriously put to shame….
But that’s ok – I only market them, and sell them all over the USA – I understand. My job is at the desk, selling them as low as I can, beating other dealers prices…..and giving them 100+ new homes….. The rest is all in my dreams, and you can’t take that away ! I’ll just keep dreaming of that code name Super Camaro Beast running wild in the Hills of Michigan……
Tired of all that censorship, banning, high supporting vendor costs? So was I, and now we’re proud to start the most advanced, Facebook friendly Camaro Forum on the net! We support all the Camaro Clubs out there, and gatherings everywhere in the USA and Canada.
We’ll have a gathering at the NASCAR race weekend in July at Indy, and be at BBOMG 2012 !

Chevrolet today unveiled the 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition – the fastest, most capable convertible in Corvette’s history – as well as a 60th Anniversary Package that will be available on all 2013 Corvette models.
“The 2013 model year will be historic for Corvette, marking its 60th Anniversary and the final year for the current ‘C6’ generation,” said Chris Perry, vice president, Global Marketing and Strategy for Chevrolet. “We couldn’t think of a more fitting way to celebrate these milestones than bringing back one of the most-coveted combinations in the brand’s history – the Corvette convertible and a 427 cubic-inch engine.”
The 60th Anniversary Package and 427 Convertible will make their public debut at the Barrett Jackson collector car auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Jan 21, and will arrive at U.S. Chevrolet dealers early this summer.
Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition
The Corvette 427 Convertible blends elements of the Z06 and ZR1 models to create the fastest and most-capable convertible in Corvette’s history.
Its heart is the 427-cubic-inch (7.0L) LS7 engine from the Corvette Z06. Rated at 505 horsepower (377 kW) and 470 lb.-ft. of torque (637 Nm), it is the most powerful engine ever installed in a production Corvette convertible – and, like the Z06, the 427 Convertible is only available with a six-speed manual transmission.
The LS7 was co-developed with the Corvette Le Mans-winning GT1 engine and features lightweight titanium connecting rods and intake valves, as well as racing-inspired high-flow cylinder heads and a dry-sump oiling system. It is assembled by hand at GM’s Performance Build Center, where customers who purchase the 427 Convertible Collector Edition can purchase the Corvette Build Experience option and assemble the engine that will power their new car.
The 427 Convertible also features several carbon-fiber components that help reduce weight, including:
The weight reduction brings the 427 Convertible’s curb weight to 3,355 pounds (1,522 kg). Combined with its 505-horsepower LS7 engine, it gives the 427 Convertible a power-to-weight ratio of 6.64 – or one horsepower for every 6.64 pounds of vehicle mass. That’s better than:
The combination of low mass and high output will make the 427 Convertible one of the fastest convertibles in the world, delivering estimated 0-60 performance of 3.8 seconds, quarter-mile performance of 11.8 seconds, lateral acceleration of 1.04 g and a top speed of more than 190 mph.
The 427 Convertible is available in 2LT, 3LT and 4LT trim levels and will carry a unique vehicle identification number sequence, similar to the Corvette ZR1.
Corvette 60th Anniversary Package
All 2013 Corvette models, including the 427 Convertible, will be available with a 60th Anniversary Package, featuring an Arctic White exterior with a Blue Diamond leather-wrapped interior with suede accents. Convertible models will have a blue top.
Additional content includes a ZR1-style rear spoiler, special badging, gray-painted brake calipers and the “60th” logo on the wheel center caps, steering wheel and seat headrests. An optional graphics package adds full-length racing stripes in Pearl Silver Blue, including a tonal stripe stitched into the convertible top, extending the graphic theme over the roof.
For 2013, all Corvettes will feature 60th Anniversary badges on the fascias and the “waterfall” panel on convertible models, as well as 60th logos in the instrument panel gauge cluster and on the sill plates.
Charity Auction at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale
The first Corvette 427 Convertible offered to the public will go to the highest bidder at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale collector car auction, on Saturday, Jan. 21. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Drive to End Hunger food relief program.
Chevrolet and Hendrick Motorsports are teaming up for the auction, including Hendrick team driver and four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Jeff Gordon. Team owner Rick Hendrick helped launch the Drive to End Hunger program with AARP and the AARP Foundation.
The Drive to End Hunger is part of a multi-year sponsorship for Gordon’s No. 24 Chevrolet. It calls on racing fans, corporations and charitable organizations to raise money, build awareness, and engage Americans who face the threat of hunger.
A legacy of 427-powered Corvettes
Early 427-powered Corvettes, particularly convertibles, offered from 1966 to 1969 are some of the most-coveted and collectable Corvettes ever produced.
The first 427-powered Corvette rolled off the assembly line for the 1966 model year. Two performance levels of the 427 were initially offered – an “L30” version rated at 390 horsepower and the “L72,” which cranked out 425 horsepower. Both were rated at 460 lb-ft. of torque.
The range of 427 engines grew in 1967, with the addition of the “L71” and “L88” options. The L71 added a unique triple-carburetor induction system that helped boost output to 435 horsepower. Known to collectors as “427/435” cars, these ’67 models – especially the convertibles – are especially sought-after collector cars.
The “L88” delivered 430-horsepower (with a single four-barrel carburetor) thanks to racing-tuned aluminum heads. Intended for customers who would immediately transform their new Corvette into a race car, the L88 was installed in just 216 production Corvettes between 1967 and 1969.
In 1969, a special “L89” 427 engine combined the L71’s induction system with the L88’s aluminum heads, offering maximum horsepower with an approximately 100-pound weight advantage over the standard iron heads. Also in 1969, Chevrolet built two “ZL1” 427 Corvette coupes. The ZL1 engine was essentially an all-aluminum version of the L88, with the aluminum cylinder block and heads offering a tremendous weight advantage for racing. More of the engines were sold as crate engines to racers.
By 1970, the big-block engine grew to 454 cubic inches, just as the trend in high-compression, high-performance engines was beginning to wane. The four-year run of 427 Corvettes was already established as the golden era of performance
Commemorative Collector Edition and Anniversary Edition models
Rare and low-production examples of the Corvette have been around since its 1953 introduction, but Chevrolet didn’t begin building commemorative models until 1978, when the 25th Anniversary model – also known as the Silver Anniversary Corvette – was offered. The Corvette was in its third generation then and at the close of that epoch in 1982, a Collectors Edition was offered, as well.
Those special models launched what has become a tradition for the Chevrolet Corvette, which has offered milestone anniversary and generational collector-edition models ever since. The 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible represents the first time a Collector Edition and Anniversary Edition are being offered in the same year – and available on the same car.
Below is a list of the Collector Edition and Anniversary Edition models, as well as production numbers and their distinguishing features.
